Art Classes

After a long break I am teaching art classes again. I was plannnig to start back up last fall after Amelia was born, but her unexpected diagnosis and health issues delayed everything. I am excited to start teaching again. It helps me to remember how much I love art and how passionate I am about it. I have been teaching art lessons out of my home for almost 3 years now. I started off with 2 classes which consisted of my 2 nephews and their friends. Now I have 5 classes and if I had time I could probably add about 2 more. Each class consists of about 4 kids ranging in ages from 4 to 16 (the classes are separated by age group.) I do really love art!! I am such an artsy-fartsy geek, especially when it comes to the technical part of what goes into a piece of artwork. I love how the elements of art/design (line, shape, form, space, texture, value, and color) are the building blocks of every work of art, whether an artist consciously thinks about them or unconsciously uses them as a basis. I love the theory of composition and balance and all of the principles of design (the way inwhich the elements are organized.) Sorry, I could talk all day about art, but I won't. I am so glad to be able to teach lessons to children and young adults and help them appreciate and maybe even aquire a passion for art (and of course it doesn't hurt that I make a little money doing it, too). When I was studying fine art at Georgia State University I remember making a conscious decision to become a mother instead of a great artist. In my opinion to become a great artist you must be devote your time into studying and creating, which is very hard to do with children. You must be selfish (I don't mean that to be negative), whereas to be a mother you must be selfless. I knew that I could still create artwork and that art will always be a part of my life, but that I would never create a painting or drawing that would inspire thousands; I had to sacrifice any great masterpieces that might have been. Instead I choose to create living masterpieces who are their own work of art and even though they are not always perfect they inspire me and hopefully will grow to inspire those around them.

I had to add one more....

This is a collage of my girls that I am using as a photo-signature on my Downsyn.com forum.

Spring Photo shoot

For those of you who don't know, my brother, Doug, is a part-time professional photographer. I can always count on him to take great pictures of my girls. A few weeks ago we had pictures taken of them in their Easter dresses and a couple naked pics of Amelia (notice how their Easter dresses match... I couldn't resist!) Amelia is 6 months in the pictures and Mary is 3 yrs 1 month. Mary looks like such a big girl next to Amelia! We got about 70 really good pictures, but obviously I couldn't post all of then here, so I just chose a few of my favorites.

True Friends

Every parent hopes that their child will have friendship in their life. I have often wondered and worried about my girls. Will they have true friends or just friends who are nice to them because they are "different" or "special?" Will they be excited about inviting typical friends over to play or to birthday parties only to have them decline the invitation ? I am comforted by the knowledge that they will always have each other to call friend. I look at the other girls their ages and think about what it would be like if they were not delayed... how they would interact and play with them. Today Mary was invited to go to eat and play at McDonalds with a friend for her birthday. It was Mary, another little girl, and the birthday girl and Mary was the only one with a disability. Seeing the birthday girl light up with excitement when Mary came in brought joy to my soul! Although Mary did not interact the same and does not speak as well as the the other girls, she played and was included and loved by the other girls... her friends. Mary had a great time and when we left she said, "alia" (Mary's version of the birthday girl's name) and signed play. I asked her if she had fun and she said, "yeah," with excitement. Mary can not do a lot of the things that her peers do like play dress up or have long conversations, but her sweet friends accept her and consider her a good friend anyway. I am so grateful for those little girls who love her and are true friends despite her differences. I am so grateful for the parents of her peers who invite us on play-dates and to birthday parties. I dread the day when my sweet Mary comes crying to me because someone made fun of her or because someone doesn't want to be her friend because she is "different." I know that those days will come and that there will be many of them, until then I am so glad that she has wonderful girls who call her friend so willingly.
